Frequently Asked Questions

What is LEANS?
LEANS is a neurodiversity-affirming classroom learning program that supports students to explore and understand different ways of thinking, learning, communicating and experiencing the world. It is designed for teachers to deliver to whole classes across a structured sequence of lessons that build understanding over time.
What is LEANS not?
LEANS is not:
-
A diagnostic or screening tool
-
A behaviour modification program
-
A social skills intervention
-
An anti-bullying program (although it may contribute to more inclusive attitudes and understanding)
-
A one-off activity or standalone lesson
LEANS is intended to be delivered as a complete learning experience, with each lesson building on the next.
Who is LEANS designed for?
LEANS was originally developed for upper primary-aged students, generally around 8–11 years old. While some content may be adaptable for other age groups, the program was designed with this age range in mind.
Can LEANS be used in different educational settings?
LEANS was developed for use within mainstream classroom settings and is designed to support whole-class learning. It may also be used in other educational contexts where appropriate, though it works best when embedded within a classroom environment.
How should LEANS be delivered?
LEANS is designed to be delivered:
-
As a full sequence of lessons
-
To an entire class group
-
By a classroom teacher
Using isolated activities or delivering only selected components is not recommended, as the learning is intended to develop progressively across the program.
Can LEANS be repeated each year?
LEANS is generally intended to be completed once with a class. However, the ideas, language and understandings introduced through the program can continue to be revisited and reinforced over time.
Is training required to deliver LEANS?
No formal training is required to deliver LEANS. The Teacher Handbook has been designed to provide educators with the guidance and resources needed to facilitate the lessons in a supportive and accessible way.
Is LEANS evidence-based?
Yes. The original LEANS program was evaluated in Scottish schools, with research findings suggesting that the program supported increased understanding of neurodiversity and more inclusive peer attitudes among students.
The University of Edinburgh has culturally adapted the program for Australian contexts through LEANS Australia, which is being piloted in Australian schools during Terms 3 and 4 of 2026. Research findings from the Australian pilot will be shared following completion of the study.
Are there assessment tools included?
Some evaluation tools, including quizzes and reflection activities, have been used within research contexts. These are not essential for delivering the program but may be used where appropriate.
Are the LEANS materials free to use?
Yes. LEANS materials are free to use for educational purposes. They are not intended for commercial use, including selling the program or charging fees for delivery.
Can I adapt or modify the materials?
LEANS has been designed as a complete program, with lessons intended to work together as a cohesive learning experience. Significant modifications or selective use of materials is not recommended, as this may impact the integrity and effectiveness of the program.
Are there versions for other age groups?
Currently, LEANS is primarily designed for upper primary-aged students. There are limited resources available for other age groups at this stage, though future adaptations and developments may occur over time.
